“John Holmes was a very private man. He was good to me and my son. He taught us, a lot like a mentor does.”

Life with the Amersons

Although Ed Nash was temporarily put away when John was released from prison in November of 1982, John continued to be on guard for others like David Lind, whom he believed was still a threat.

Bill Amerson: He got out of jail and came right to my house from jail. That’s how I started protecting him. He was the godfather of my children. He loved them and he loved me. He taught my daughter to drive. He needed someplace private to go — that was me.

Denise Amerson: H John moved back to our house with us and weird things started to happen. My sister and I weren’t allowed to stay in our house by ourselves and then, the car blows up in the driveway. So I started asking questions, “Who is doing this? Why? What’s going on?”

[John] told me that he didn’t do it, and whatever I needed to know, he would answer the best that he could.

He didn’t really know anything except to be John Holmes and he wasn’t real happy with that person or that title. The rest of the world couldn’t separate what he did for a living and who he really was inside. He wasn’t such a strong person and in the industry, there were a lot of drugs; there’s a lot of chaos, there’s a lot of bullshit. He got lost in that.

Bill Amerson: John said something to me one time that has carried — I’ve never forgotten this. I had two motorcycles and I would go for a motorcycle ride and I would let him use my other motorcycle. We were in West L.A. one night at the corner of Southdale and Bundy, and I said to John, “We’re going to turn left here. We’re going up to the mountains. Follow me.”

He looked at me, and there were tears in his eyes. He said, “I would follow you anywhere.” I’ve never forgotten that. He later bought the motorcycle from me. I gave it to him and he said that he would give me the money. Then, he wrecked it.

We went to movies, we put a new roof on my house, we’d watch football games, hockey games. We went to Vegas a lot. He had no friends except me, and that’s how he wanted it.

Ron Jeremy: I know that Bill and John were very, very close. He was his closest friend, bodyguard and advisor. He lived with him, he took care of him.

Sean Amerson: H As far as their friendship was concerned, it was sort of like a love-hate/marriage thing. On one hand, John would do something that was absolutely nuts and my dad would just wig out about it. Then he would look down, shake his head and go, “Fucking John.” He would realize it was John that was doing it and that sort of made it OK.
